[PRODUCT]960[/PRODUCT] this is not really a bodybuilding question. outside of being on a pH cycle, occasionally, i go out to drink with friends. i cant drink that much matched to them. sometimes, even if i drink around 8 cans of beer, i need around 13 hours of sleep and another 24 hours to re-cooperate fully. on occasions, i've noticed that it could take me 48-60 hours to re-cooperate after just drinking like 10 cans of beer on an outing. my g/f however, can drink the same amount, and function just fine on like 5 hours sleep. 12 hours after she's had like 8 cans of beer, she looks fully re-cooperated and she tells me she feels fine. she is only around a hundred pounds. i am assuming that my liver is weak or that i am just pretty weak period as some of my friends can go up to around 16 cans of beer and 24 hours later, they look and tell me that they feel just fine...... i am thinking of taking milk thistle so that i can re-cooperate faster. any ideas on how much faster i might recooperate? i don't necessarily want to drink more than 10 cans. but if i could recooperate fully in say 24 hours, that would be really really great.

they probably just drink more often than you do and hence have higher tolerance

There are alot of factors that could cause this. Judging by your age, I seriously doubt you have any major liver problems (unless you are an alcoholic/drug abuser). A few tricks that I've learned are to either eat right before you drink or while your drinking. Not good if you're trying to diet (but hey, alcohol's not good on a diet anyway), but startchy foods like bread, nuts, and crackers are excellent! Also, intermittenly drink water to keep from being dehydrated. All a hangover is is your body responding to dehydration. When you wake up, drink a couple of glasses of water. Milk thistle and ALA are always good, but as far as you needing them, I'd say you dont really.

Are you Asian? Does your skin redden when you drink? If so you may be among the portion of the Asian population that lacks the enzymes necessary to break down acetaldehyde. This could seriously impact hangover recovery time as well.

you're just getting old. it happens to all of us.

I've been a heavy drinker for 8 years now, and I'm asian. Its strange, but my cheeks used to never turn red until recently. I used to never get hang overs either, or if I did, it didn't affect me enough for me to notice it. Is this age or what? I was planning to go on a pH cycle but now I'm actually a little scared for my liver.

I actually have noticed opposite. As I get older, it is hard to get hang over. I drunk a lot in my late teens and early 20s, and I got hangover often. These days, I even don't get hang over even monring after boys night out. I dont drink as often as I used to either. But I dont think I had hangover for like a few years. Maybe, just me.

Probably has little to do with your liver and more of an individual reaction. Alcohol will not cause serious liver problems unless you drink chronically, have a liver condition already, or take it along with other drugs. Pro Liver is still a good idea when you drink, though. |

Please don't take this the wrong way, this answer is meant as encouragement and not criticism..
....... ....just thank God that's the way you are. As a reforming alcoholic, who could drink just about anyone under the table I wish I had been unable to drink so much. Just throw away your macho pride and explain that your body is not used to having shit pumped into it and so reacts more extremely than most people's bodies. If you don't need the alcohol to perform socially, then just say you don't want to compete at drinking games...they always end in tears. Best of luck and hope you feel comfortable with the way you are. BTW alcohol does disturb (lower) testosterone production, deposit fat, causes throat and tongue cancers and more 'roid rage'-like symptoms than roids.... |

Yeah, alcohol is among the worst drugs, from pretty much any perspective.

elmomonster: i am asian. my skin does not turn red when i drink. one of my colleagues' face and neck go completely flush red after 2 or 3 beers. he can go on to drink around 8-12 cans. but he's never mentioned anything about recovery time problems. it is my guess only that it may be better if your face can go flush red. i heard something that it is a good thing.
Posted by: lancelot Sep 9 2004, 09:34 PM
turning red when you drink alcohol is not good. It means you don't have the enzyme to break down the alcohol. alcohol becomes a toxin and you turn red due to an allergic reaction to it. some people turn purple or rashes start to appear depending on the severity of your reaction to alcohol. many asians turn red for this very reason. mino lee's problem is that he's getting old and rebounding from a night of boozing is a harder and longer recovery than someone younger. i sure don't recover from binge drinking as easily as when i was 21 compared to 34 now. anyhow, alcohol is so dirty a drug especially for bodybuilders. there are so much "better" drugs legal or not IMO.

Take B 12 before you go to bed with a big glass of water, you will be fine in the morning. That was my trick all through college.

Heredity and Metabolism (as well as STRESS) are big factors in ability to digest and break down foods and alcoholic beverages. Western Eurpope blood lines / genetics (i.e. France, Ireland, England, Germany, Portugal, etc. or similar combinations) are good if you like to drink 8 beers a day or more. The genetics will favor these groups since those cultures regularly consume alcohol (then and now) as part of their daily caloric intake (i.e. wine/beer/ale is consumed as beverage). In the old days, (largely due to poor water quality throughout the centuries), wine/ale/beer were the only safe drinking beverages. If you are a Native American (Indian) or an Eskimo, your genetic blood lines differ from other groups. Current studies suggest that moderate (three 12 oz. beers a day) contribute to better overall health. According to controlled studies, drinking more than three 12 oz. beers a day tends to increases risk factors in digestive organ tissues, depending on the control groups and how the data is manipulated to reach a conclusion. Another consideration is distilled 'hard' alcohol such as whiskey/gin/vermouth/vodka/tequila. Distilling intensifies the alcohol and thus makes it difficult or impossible to digest when compared to beer/ale. Wine/Champagne is somewhere in between. The bottom line is: According to my research, many doctors, dentists, and lawyers have KEG beer at their homes, and they drink as many as they want on a daily basis. At a recent complete physical I told the physician that I LOVE to drink beer, and he smiled. He told me that the human body completely metabolizes beer in one hour. Corina Everson and her husband Geoff said on their show BODY SHAPING (in the early 1990's) that if you like to drink alot of beer, then it is a good idea to work out the cardiovascular for like 20 to 30 minutes a day or every other day in your target range to keep the carbohydrates metabolized and moving through. (Coffee in the morning is good too because it lets the liver and kidneys release omega 3 fatty acids into the blood stream where they can be quickly burned by the muscles. Phsical exercize is a great way to keep your metabolism fine tuned. Beer is the beverage of choice for many athletes. It's a great carbohydrate source the next day after it is all metabolized. Just stay well hydrated ! Keep filtered tap (or bottled) water near by at all times. BTW Winston Churchill drank Scotch every day and consumed that with food and water, smoked stogy cigars regularly, and lived to be a good healthy 96 years old ! The bottom line (number two) is: It depends on your metabolism and heredity, as well as your overall physical condition. And, as a final foot note: Control studies only suggest certain outcomes. The final analysis: Question: Does beer consumption of eight or more beers a day cause health problems ? Answer: Not Necessarily Question: Does smoking cigarettes cause cancer ? Answer: Not Necessarily. The Human Body is Very Resilient. Build It Up however you can. STRESS is a bigger killer than alcohol or tobacco. STRESS is the biggest killer on the planet. Stay Cool ! Stay in touch with your higher power, and avoid using anger as a reason to consume excessively large quantities of food or beverage. Vent anger in constructive ways. Anger is not a gift. Life is a gift. Eat, Drink, and Be Merry ! Take your vitamins, eat well, sleep well, and drink as much beer as you want !

Very very well said Kevykev, I come from a long line of Irish Alcoholics. I love thick dark beers, like Guiness, or something a little lighter like Sam Adams. There are some excellent German Beers that come to mind such as Salvatore Munchin, DobleBach...anyway, I usually take a week or so to drink a 6 pack, 1-3 every other night or so. Anyway, knowing that I have the gene from my family, I always try to keep it in check and drink water with it...To the original poster, You are blessed to not have a high tolerance for alcohol, and you should not try to develope one. I plan to stay completely away from all alcohol during cycle (M1T) starting next week. Or is an occasional one still ok? Anyway, nice post Kev

Alcohol is a vasodialtor, so it tends to cause an increase in color in almost everyone. The people who get really flushed (and, it does occur most in asians) have a problem with the enzyme that metabolizes acetylaldehyde, not alcohol. It is not good though, as it results in a back-up of alcohol metabolism and an increase in histamime activity.

I tend to pass gas alot the day after but rarely get hungover because I just stay drunk basically. EVEN when i'm at the gym it's not rare for me to knock back a couple of beers or take some vodka mixed w/creatine and soda in my shaker bottle along the way to my workout. after the workout I drink tons of water and usually pass out by then.

I'm a college student who enjoys drinking as well as working out just as hard.. I can recall multiple times per week drinking 15-18 shots of vodka and still going to the gym and working equally as hard.. I am completely with the previous post of saying that "gas" is a big problem but hangovers rarely occur for me.. I feel that working through a "hangover" is a healthy thing to do and it almost makes up for it.. I've been practicing these drinking habits for several years and have maintained a physically fit body of 6'2 195 pounds with about 8-9% body fat.. I love to live life with the "wrestlers" mentality.. While researching supplements, I came across M1T and am completely terrified to try it because of the incredible stress it puts on your liver.. I have heard from several of my friends that M1T and drinking CAN NOT mix.. I have been on CE2 and NO2 while lifting and taking protein for about two years and was wondering if when I decided to try a cycle of M1T if it would be possible to drink once a week, or even twice a week if I was consumed milk thistle and liver protecting supplements? Any feedback would be helpful...

If you took M1T and drank once a week, you would DIE.

dude, thats the most irresponsible thing ive ever heard, some people actually take the advice people give them on these forums. If you are using any ph products you should not drink alcohol at all, your liver is already being stressed enough by the ph, the liver care products your are taking are protecting your organs from the ph, NOT giving u the leeway to drink while on them. If you cant use these products responsibly then dont use them at all. Its things like this that will give you health problems and then you will blaim it on the ph, making the industry look even worse |

the redness thing.. it happens to my girlfriend a bit, not much, and she gets drunk easy (2-3 drinks). but in the winter when she is pale.. well we all get pale when we loose our tan from the summer, you can notice it on her more then when shes tan from the summer. she dosent drink often, and usually not that much.. but if she does drink alot, she gets really sick and has a wicked hangover. i can drink alot and feel fine in 8hours of sleep, i might still be drunk when i getup, but i goes away and i feel good, unless i mix liquor with beer (drop a shot of wiskey in a glass of heineken and chug it), then i feel like shit.. I can usuaully drink 12 beers in an evening and have 8hours of sleep and feel alright the next day (good enough to do my typical sunday activities). But yet i have other friends who always get sick, and other friends who never get sick, and some are 140lbs and 220lbs its completely random it seems, i think its because everyones different.

when i used to drink alot i'd only get hangovers after heavy nights of drinking... like 15+ drinks in a night Now if i drink 6 or 7 i feel like shit for the entire next day It's got alot to do with tolerance... your liver actually becomes more efficient at metabolizing alcohol the more often you drink
