Whey pricing

You guys probably remember a yr. or two ago when supplement companies circulated alerts that the price of milk worldwide was going way up, so they'd be forced to increase prices big time. Well, I saw on the news tonight where milk prices have plunged and many dairy farmers are going broke.

So, with this development, I wonder if we'll see the prices drop to BELOW the prices we were paying before the price increases. My suspicion is that they'll keep the prices up there because we're used to paying that, at this point.

I think I' may write to a couple of these companies and ask when we can expect the prices to drop that way since the market value of milk is now much less than it was even before. Might get some interesting answers from them as to how they can justify keeping the prices where they are now. Profit margins will be out the ass if they do.

Anyone else have this cross their mind?

I remember the price hike alert. I was unaware of the new milk price reduction though. I don't get much time to read or watch the news while school is in.

I know I'd like to see the price drop on whey. I don't think it would be out of the realm of possiblity.

Great post, it definitely has me thinking.

Whey did go up quite a bit over the last year or two. But, it has come back down a little. Higher prices = incentive to eat MOAR. cool.gif

Just buy Lipotropic Protein. We have priced a five pounder at around 30 bucks, and kept it there as we have improved the blend, the taste and everything else about the product.

Support the companies who play fair with you in good and bad markets

Looks like a good product...reasonably priced.

Im not holding my breath for whey prices to drop...the processing probably sucks out most of the cost....manufacturers will probably keep prices where they are at until the end of q, if anything they might just top up the containtiners and put a 15% MORE sticker on it...

Prices will never drop to below what they were before. Dairymen are just being forced to cut the size of their herd or go out of the game all together. Due to this, alfalfa prices have dropped off the board and it is very hard to sell at this point. The market for milk will only increase in demand with limited supply.

I remember the day when 10lb of good protein was $45

sad thing is that was only maybe couple of years ago

Anyways LG protein blend has a nice write up of all the differnt types of protien and filled with all the building blocks you need in one.

Defiantly reasonably priced too!

I dont really think they will drop prices even if they get milk dirt cheap, I mean come on as a business owner you wouldn't cut off your profit margin when people are still buying from you!!

That's how business lose customers. Prices are set by the market, which is supply and demand. Supply drying up and milk prices soaring was the reason these companies gave us for raising their prices a lot higher. It stands to reason that when the price of milk plummets, as it has now, the prices for whey should go right back to to where they'd previously been or lower.

If companies think ppl don't understand basic economics and attempt to pocket that whole extra profit, ppl will recognize they\'re being screwed and will stop buying from them. If ppl sense that a company is being shady w/ them, customers will bolt in a hot minute and start getting their protein from whole foods.

I know I'll stop buying whey retail if they don't conform to what everyone knows the current market price is. Has anyone inquired at any of these manufacturers yet? I plan to do so, myself and see what thy have to say about it.

I think your giving the masses too much credit. Most people are morons and will buy whatever they're friends, some pro bodybuilder on an advert or the dude at GNC tell them to buy. And as for the retailer, for them the price is set by whatever the customer is willing to pay. Not that I don't hope your right of course, I just feel like the average consumer is clueless. I guess we'll see.

Price undercutters will keep prices lower. Unless, all manufacturers get together and fix the prices. I don't see that happening. And, I think that is illegal.

Posted by: Josh47933 Sep 18 2009, 02:13 PM
Yeah, that is illegal. The thing is, they should have all reacted to the market price of milk worldwide by now so the prices should have already dropped. They may assume no one watches the news or something, but it's been made public that milk prices have tanked.

Okay, so I just wrote to three major sources of protein powder and inquired about when the prices will drop since milk prices have dropped 36% recently. I wonder what they'll say.

Exactly what I'm trying to say. There wont actually be "a company" that loses customers upon this, instead ALL the supplement companies may do it hand in hand to keep prices up so they "force" people into buying it as they've used to regardless of there dramatic profit increase.

Now I know the word "force" is offensive to many of us as we shouldn't be acting like pigs and buying whatever we're sold, but again I think the majority of supp buyers are morons, that is why the supp companies will still have "enough customers" to keep there illegal actions going. I mean, so what if all ten or twenty of us in this thread stop buying whey if another 100 out there are still buying anything they are sold?

Just like how muscletech is still a best seller:D MANY know how crappy there supps are, but morons were enough to make it going!! They will do it again and make the whey companies go with there prices!!!

Word of mouth is a powerful thing. Some companies make all their money selling protein powder online and depend on good word of mouth/reputation on forums. If they try to screw over their target market and ppl. figure out what's going on, they won't stick around long. Of course some companies are bigger than that, but I'm not thinking as much about them.

Yeah why buy protein loaded with sugars and carbs??? And overpriced for just 2 pounds?! I've personally tried the LG Lipotropic Protein mentioned above and it's awesome! Five pounds for around $30 (66 servings at 25 grams per serving). That is hard to beat! One friend of mine tried it and said it tasted like meat. hahaha But I've let several of my other buddies try some, and they couldn't stop talking about how good it tastes in water.

Word of mouth is definitely one of the best sources of advertising. Most of the products I've picked up have been because of recommendations on forums, etc.

One bulk protein supplier personally answered my email so far and was pretty good about explaining that they kept they're prices as low as possible the whole time. He also mentioned a 5 lbs. of iso for $20 deal, so I'll say there are respectable distributors out there that aren't gouging ppl. Not sure if I should mention places because BN sells protein. Maybe it's okay because it's not sold in bulk here. I'll hold off for now.
