It's combine time now, so i guess it's time to look forward and get ready for the regular season. Alot of things to discuss before the season starts. Combine, Free Agency, Prodays, Draft, Mini Camps, Training Camps. Also, dumb players who get into trouble, like pacman.

Texas Tech’s Vasquez dominates O-line bench press
Posted: February 20th, 2009 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Juan Garcia, Louis Vasquez, NFL Combine, Travis Bright

The first bench press results of the combine are in, and among the offensive linemen, there was Louis Vasquez and everyone else.

The Texas Tech guard lifted the required 225 pounds 39 times, five more than BYU’s Travis Bright and Juan Garcia of Washington. It was the fifth most reps by an offensive lineman at the combine since 2000.

The top 10:

Player School Reps
LOUIS VASQUEZ TEXAS TECH 39
TRAVIS BRIGHT BRIGHAM YOUNG 34
JUAN GARCIA WASHINGTON 34
ALEX BOONE OHIO STATE 33
ROBBY FELIX UTEP 33
A.Q. SHIPLEY PENN STATE 33
JASON SMITH BAYLOR 33
JON COOPER OKLAHOMA 31
JAMON MEREDITH SOUTH CAROLINA 31

ERIC WOOD LOUISVILLE 30

Vasquez probably took some Neovar before the test.

If you go to the nfl.com website you can watch some of the workouts... a "scronny" ass kicked put up 225lbs for 25 reps. Not to damn shabby for a position that is supposed to be for a puss.

Boone will easily go top 15....

I like how sanchez's stock is way up now, i think thats bullshit...
and crabtree is dropping, why is he so afraid to run the 40?

Posted by: JTILK Feb 20 2009, 10:29 PM
Crabtree is still rehabbin' the ankle is fouled up at the end of last year. Thats why he's not running.

I never heard that....

I think he's afraid to run it honestly, once they see hes not a 4.3 runner, his stock will drop tremendously ......

I wanna see what LeSean Jackson will run...

Crabtree is going in the first 5 picks at least.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Teams waiting to draft Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree will have to wait six to 10 weeks longer to see how fast he can run a 40-yard dash.

Crabtree, according to a source, has the beginning stages of a stress fracture in his left foot that will require a screw to be surgically inserted to stabilize that area of the foot.

Crabtree
The fracture was discovered during a bone scan conducted Friday during the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

The scan revealed a slight crack in the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot.

The fracture, according to a source, was so slight he could have opted not to have surgery, but there was the possibility that the crack would get worse had the screw not been inserted.

Though not considered serious, the injury will prevent him from running for a six to 10 weeks. According to a source, Crabtree plans to take the conservative approach and try to be ready in 10 weeks.

Crabtree, who had not scheduled the surgery as of early Saturday afternoon, had been considered the top wide receiver in the 2009 draft.

Because he's an underclassman, teams looking to draft him don't have accurate times in the 40-yard dash and shuttles to help with their evaluation process.

Now, those interested teams will have to rely on tapes from his games over the past two seasons.

Crabtree, who suffered a right ankle injury late last season that had not completely healed, was not planning to run at the combine, preferring to wait until his pro timing day in March.

In 2008, Jonathan Stewart, a first-round talent, ran at the combine despite a bad turf toe. The injury didn't get better and he ended requiring surgery. Stewart, despite the surgery and not being healthy for teams around the draft, went in the first round to the Carolina Panthers.

Posted by: texaswolf Feb 22 2009, 09:39 PM
He has nothing to worry about. He is a fucking phenom. He reminds me a lot of Andre Johnson with his size and hands.

Posted by: JTILK Feb 22 2009, 10:13 PM
Regardless I'd still draft the guy and be happy to have him on my team... they are sayin' the stress fracture will require surgery but shouldn't be anything serious.

Posted by: cc-10 Feb 24 2009, 01:08 AM
Andre the giant loser
The big loser this weekend was Alabama tackle Andre Smith. He came to Indianapolis no worse than the second offensive tackle in the draft and a likely top 10 pick. He left as a question mark, in free fall down most draft boards.

Smith's unexplained departure had scouts, coaches and GMs puzzled, though one NFC general manager I spoke to said it only underscored questions he had about the guy. It also boosted the stock of Baylor tackle Jason Smith, who is neck-and-neck with Virginia's Eugene Monroe as the top player at the position. Smith is a converted tight end, and he led all offensive linemen with 33 reps at 225 pounds.

The biggest repercussions, however, are for Andre Smith.

"Best-case scenario; You've got a young, immature kid who hopefully will learn," Mayock said. "Worst-case scenario: You'll have the beginning of erratic behavior that you won't want to deal with over the next four or five years of a contract. And you'll take him off your board."

Chris Canty, 6-7, 280; NA; 26; Brad Blank -- A big, physical, young base end who can slide inside and play over the guard in nickel. Can flash dominating talent at times, and when he rushes from the inside it's difficult to throw the ball over his outstretched arms.

Wow, bad move by the Pats only getting a 2nd rounder out of that... I would have thought Cassel would go for a 1st round pick alone what with how many teams have horrid QBs right now.

Think about it: you're trading one of the Top 10ish QBs in the NFL for what should end up being the 34th best player in this draft class? Sounds idiotic to me.

Posted by: texaswolf Feb 28 2009, 06:15 PM
Vrabel is old so no big loss there. They probably don't want to have to pay Cassell and Brady. I think they franchised Cassell after the season so he had a pretty hefty salary they would have to dish out next year.

I think I might have waited until I saw Brady in action this next year before I made the move though.

Posted by: JTILK Feb 28 2009, 06:37 PM
They needed the relief from Cassel's salary... not to mention I'm sure they searched around before making this deal and if they could have gotten better they would have. Whos to say he isn't a product of "The Hoodie" moreso than a franchise QB.

Roy Williams wants to know what his future holds immediately, so his agent, Jordan Woy, has asked the Dallas Cowboys to either cut or trade the strong safety by today.

The Cowboys have made Williams available for trade but the market has been slow, largely because teams believe the club will eventually release him. Williams is scheduled to count $6.6 million against the 2009 salary cap.

If the Cowboys trade or cut Williams, they will save roughly $2 million against the cap. His 2008 season was cut short by a twice-fractured right forearm that limited him to three games. He finished with nine tackles

Some of these teams are making some dumb moves as far as overpaying. The Skins are paying out the ass for a defensive player even as they end the expensive Jason Taylor experiment after an unproductive, injury prone yr. These guys just don't get that you build successful teams from the draft, not pricey free agents.

Not to mention, their real needs are on the other side of the ball, while they spend freely on defense.

Pacman Jones goes to blows during Pros vs. Joes
10:49 PM Fri, Mar 06, 2009 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips
Jivin' has gone wrong for poor, misunderstood Pacman Jones once again.

This classic tale comes from Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times (via Pro Football Talk) after a stop by Spike TV's Pros vs. Joes set.

One of the better collisions was one at the goal line between Jones and a "Joe" named Dan Adams, a 5-foot-10 sales rep from Boston who played linebacker at Holy Cross. He set an NCAA single-game record with a staggering 21 solo tackles against Colgate.
Anyway, Adams stuck Jones at the goal line, jarring loose the football. It was pretty funny, because Jones had been talking trash to that point, referring to Adams as "Waterboy." A few minutes after the hit, the two exchanged punches and had to be separated.

"He hit me 10 yards out of bounds, kind of a cheap shot," Adams said. "I couldn't sit there and not retaliate. You've got to have some pride and dignity."

As for the oft-suspended Jones, released by the Dallas Cowboys after the season, he didn't seem too concerned about how he came off on camera.

The good news is that no little glass umbrellas were harmed in the incident.

No word on whether Pacman still believes he'll be back at Valley Ranch.

Pacman Jones-DB-Cowboys Mar. 12 - 10:46 am et

Free agent Pacman Jones reportedly "made it rain (again) with dollar bills" at ex-teammate Marcus Spears' birthday party recently.

Making it rain isn't illegal of course, but it sure is funny to think about. "All the other players there thought he was a complete idiot for doing it," a source at the party told Profootballtalk. "It was a upscale bar/restaurant and he acted like it was a cheap Atlanta strip club. So, no, he hasn’t grown up."

Browns WR Stallworth hits, kills Fla. pedestrian

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP)—Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth hit and killed a pedestrian with his Bentley Saturday morning on a busy causeway linking Miami and Miami Beach, police said.

Stallworth was headed toward the beach when he hit a 49-year-old man around 7 a.m., said Miami Beach police spokesman Juan Sanchez. The unidentified pedestrian was taken to a nearby trauma center, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. He was near a crosswalk but it’s not clear if he was crossing legally.

Stallworth, 28, was cooperating and no charges have been filed, Sanchez said. Officers drew blood to test for drugs or alcohol, which is routine, but police said it was too early to tell if Stallworth was impaired or violating traffic laws. Police would not say where he was coming from or where he was headed.

Miami-Dade County property records show he owns two condos in a building on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami not far from the causeway and another condo in a different building in Miami.

A message seeking comment was left on the voicemail of his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

Stallworth signed a seven-year, $35 million contract with the Browns as a free agent before last season but hardly played because he was hurt. He was due a $4.75 million signing bonus Friday.

He previously played for the New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints in the NFL and the University of Tennessee in college.

He played in Philly for a couple of seasons. Not quite as bad as Buffalo, but not a balmy kind of place, either. I think the Bills might actually be a little dangerous now in the division.

For one, Edwards is a decent qb, for another thing, TO will line up opposite Lee Mays, who is a good receiver in his own right. Not to mention, they have a very solid young rb in Lynch. They should make the East interesting to watch this season.

Side note on the Bills...they have Kawika Mithcell on defense. I actually met the guy once back when he played here in KC. I was selling Infiniti at the time and he came by to test drive the QX56 suv. Nice, soft spoken guy, but didn't buy the thing.

GALLOWAY SIGNS WITH PATRIOTS
Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 14, 2009, 3:11 p.m. EDT
The New England Patriots have signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Joey Galloway to a one-year contract, according to Steve Duemig of WDAE in Tampa.

In four starts last season, Galloway caught 13 passes for 138 yards. In 2007, he caught 57 passes for 1,014 yards and six touchdowns.

According to NFL .com, Galloway has registered 682 career receptions for 10,710 yards and 77 touchdowns in 14 NFL seasons.

According to FoxSports.com's Alex Marvez, the Seahawks have traded LB Julian Peterson to the Lions for DT Cory Redding. SI's Peter King is confirming.
PFT first reported the rumor, with MLive.com confirming that the talks were ongoing. Marvez and King are reporting that the deal has been completed. It's believed that Seattle will receive a fifth-round pick as well. Redding is expected to restructure his original seven-year, $49 million deal as part of the agreement. Peterson, 30, returns home to Michigan after refusing to take a pay cut in Seattle. The Lions are now set to draft a quarterback or offensive tackle with the No. 1 overall pick.

Owners Will Talk Rules Changes Next Week
Posted by jellis at 3/18/2009 2:23 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

All 32 owners are expected to be on hand in Dana Point, Calif. for the NFL Annual Meeting, which runs Sunday through Wednesday. They'll discuss all sorts of things related to the game, including the pending negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement with the players, but the most readily apparent changes on the way will be in the form of adjustments to the rules.

NFL.com is reporting the owners are expected to approve three changes made to improve player safety, all of which were recommended by the NFL Competition Committee after its meeting in Naples, Fla. last week.

One change would come from a proposed rule making it a 15-yard penalty for a defender to hit a defenseless receiver in the head with any part of his body. Previously the defender would have had to actually launch himself at the receiver's head to draw a flag.

Also, if a pass rusher is blocked into the ground around a quarterback or at the quarterback's legs he would be subject to a 15-yard penalty for continuing the drive forcefully into the quarterback.

And the league will also consider doing away with the wedge on kickoff returns because of its history of causing injuries. That would seemingly make things a lot tougher for special teams return units.

Romo for Cutler? For Dallas Cowboys, not a chance

03:59 PM CDT on Wednesday, March 18, 2009

• E-mail

Jay Cutler wants out of Denver and has asked the Broncos to trade him. Many of you seem to think swapping Tony Romo for Cutler is a great idea.

It's not.

Actually, it's a horrible idea.

Consider this: What has Jay Cutler ever done? Nothing.

He has a great arm, but he's never led the Broncos to the playoffs. Don't forget, they choked away a three-game lead with three games to play last season, and he throws dumb interceptions with regularity because of his unwavering faith in his powerful right arm.

Yes, Romo can be frustrating with his gun-slinger mentality and the turnovers it produces. And you wish he'd be more of a leader since, ultimately, that's the quarterback's job.

Inside the Dallas Cowboys: Cutler for Romo ... no way

And despite his foolish comments after the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in December, I believe football is important to Romo, and he wants to win.

The question with Romo has never been talent. He has plenty of that. You don't throw 81 touchdowns with 46 interceptions and have a passer rating of more than 90 in three consecutive seasons by accident.

Plus, he has been to the playoffs twice in three seasons as a starter.

For now, Cutler is as overrated as they come. And the meltdown he's having because the Broncos listened to offers for him shows he has no mental fortitude.

He has not earned the right to feel disrespected after going 17-20 in his first 37 games as a starter. He has 45 touchdowns and 37 interceptions in the last two seasons.

Is that special?

Cutler went to the Pro Bowl after last season. So what? A lot of overhyped, overrated players make the Pro Bowl.

Right now, Cutler is mad because his feelings are hurt. He's too sensitive to be a championship quarterback.

Not every player can handle the scrutiny that comes from playing quarterback in Dallas. It's real because Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach are such a big part of our community.

There's no way Cutler could handle playing quarterback here. Romo, you hope, is just now figuring it out.

There's no need to give up on him for Cutler, who's been throwing an extended pity party for weeks.

No matter what passing numbers these various qb's produce, I'll STILL take Ben any day of the week. He's tough as nails, plays through pain and injury, takes a shit load of sacks and ends up being money when you need the big win. I'm so glad we got him when everyone was so hot for Eli and Rivers that draft.

Cutler is a significant upgrade since the Bears have been a great QB away from big things for yrs. Now that they have a solid sophomore RB, a dominating D and a franchise QB, they've gotta be considered North favorites and possibly early NFC favorites. I think they made a great move.

not like we have any gaping holes to build on anyways. Our main problem with our team is depth.

Posted by: cc-10 Apr 28 2009, 12:00 AM
we got a QB we can groom to be a number 2 and not spend millions on a backup

we got a kicker that can do kick offs and long field goals and is jacked enough to do some punch coverages

Lots of depth at safty b/c we need it and possibly a future start a few years from now

Jason williams takes over kevin burnettes roles as inside backer and will battle bobby carpenter for nickle and dime packages.

extra pass rush depth and future starters. ellis's deal is up soon...don't know what we have with spencer.

young and athletic and will be a lot stronger special teams....

Roy williams is our number 1 pick

We took a lot of shots at the dartboard in the 2nd day of the draft....one of them has to hit the bulls eye...

Rumors became reality Tuesday as the Pittsburgh Steelers released starting inside linebacker Larry Foote, a seven-year veteran.

It had been rumored for much of the offseason that Foote, made extraneous by the emergence of two-year veteran and former first-round pick Lawrence Timmons, would be either traded or released. It is believed the Steelers attempted to trade Foote during the NFL draft last weekend.

A seven-year veteran, Foote is still a productive defender at only 28 years old. But a combination of economics and the urgency to move Timmons into the starting lineup led to his release.

His resume includes 110 games, and 83 starts, including two Super Bowl victories. Foote has played in all 16 games for six straight seasons and started all 16 contests each of the past five years. The former University of Michigan standout is considered a strong player against the run but usually left the field in nickel situations.

The fact that Foote was scheduled to earn a base salary of $2.885 million in 2009, a steep price to pay for a player projected as a reserve, was certainly a factor in the decision to release him. Foote had a salary cap figure of $3.5 million for 2009. The Steelers will have his base salary of $2.885 million refunded into their '09 cap.

Pittsburgh is typically tight against the spending limit and can sorely use the funds provided by Foote's release. Last week the Steelers had to release tailback Gary Russell in order to have enough cap room to sign backup quarterback Charlie Batch.

Timmons was the team's first-round draft choice in 2007. He spent much of 2008 as the nickel linebacker and an occasional blitzer, two roles in which he excelled. It was generally considered that Timmons, who had 65 tackles and five sacks last season, was ready to break into the starting lineup.

In six seasons, Foote posted 431 tackles, 14½ sacks, three interceptions, 11 passes defensed, seven forced fumbles and four recoveries.

Dude forces the issue to be released from the Super Bowl champs to sign w/ the damn Lions??? I can see he's from Detroit and all but still. I'd rather be a role player on a championship team than a starter on maybe the worst team ever.

Give me Timmons any day of the week, anyway. The defense will now be even better than it was last yr. between this and getting Ziggy Hood on that aging line. The only possible downside is that Timmons will now play every down, not getting as much rest time but as much of a beast as he is, I think it will lead to a breakout yr. for him. I'm just glad they got Silverback locked up long term, speaking of linebackers.

Steelers have nowhere to go but down, Lions have nowhere to go but up. I could see a veteran guy like Foote wanting to return home for the twighlight of his career. Who knows...maybe he sees this franchise coming off the worst season ever, they've got Stafford, they've got Johnson, they've got a cool new logo...and figures maybe they'll turn it around with him.

Wishful thinking, but at least he'll get to play indoors half the yr.

Marshawn Lynch suspended for three games...just when the Bills offense was starting to look a little dangerous...lol.

He couldn't even change his name right. laugh.gif

The league has agreed to let him wear his new name this year, but it will be rendered as “Ochocinco” because that’s how he wrote it when he submitted his name-change form in Florida.

“It’s his legal name,” AFC information manager Corry Rush said Thursday.

Yeah, I got a kick out of reading that one last night. For all his vanity about changing his name he still came out looking like an idiot. I love it.

MNF finally dumped Kornheiser's annoying ass and replaced him w/ Gruden. The broadcast booth should be much improved!

Ball opening some eyes: With Ken Hamlin missing this week's sessions, Alan Ball's move to safety has picked up steam as he's joined the first team.

Ball said he last played safety full time in high school, but Phillips said Ball's competitiveness should make up for a lack of ideal size (186 pounds)

"You've got to know everything on defense at free safety, not just what you have to do," said Ball, who intercepted a Jon Kitna pass Tuesday. "At cornerback, it's just you and you have to focus on that."

Ball, a seventh-round pick in 2007, has had limited playing time in his first two seasons, but his work this off-season has earned praise from veteran linebacker Bradie James.

"Alan Ball is a guy that I definitely I would want to play with," James said. "Hopefully he'll learn and get in there and really start studying because he has a high motor. He knows what to do, and he's a guy you can be confident in."

Different sport, but I gotta take a moment to congratulate the Pens and announce that the 'Burgh is once again City of Champions! As you were.

I wish they would too. Maybe the Rooney's or Lemiuex will buy them. The current ownership and management are content to continuously "rebuild" and trade all the good players for prospects who may never pan out.

Yeah, wasn't he one of the prospects they got for McLouth? I have to admit I follow football much more and then hockey. Baseball is last. My dad is totally into baseball, though. Always knows the names, teams they're on, stats, etc. He'll watch pretty much any game on tv, his team or not.

After a sleepless night following the Philly Flop, Wade Phillips vowed to get tougher on his team.

That doesn't mean Phillips will morph into a screaming, facemask-grabbing maniac. He's well aware that players wouldn't buy a drastic personality change.

The biggest changes will be behind the scenes. For example, after this morning's practice, Phillips stressed to the players the importance of keeping up their conditioning program before training camp. If they come in heavy, their wallets will be lighter.

Each player will be given a target weight. Phillips indicated that the players who come in above those weights will be fined the league maximum of $453 per pound per day. That's a major change, considering the minimal fines given out by the Cowboys last year.

"I expect them to be in the best shape they've been in," Phillips said. "That's part of being accountable - not only to their teammates, but to themselves."

Speaking of being overweight, I'll be back after a lunch break

Badass site for you Giants fans out there.

Good article on http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2009/06/new_york_giants_safety_kenny_p.html...kid's gonna be sick.

Tell me if you can read this part and NOT think of gears though:

At the end of last season, safety Kenny Phillips was 202 pounds. During the offseason program this spring he watched his weight tick up, pound by pound, until it reached 217.

Phillips, who usually has trouble putting on weight, changed nothing about his diet or workout regimen. All the added weight was muscle, not fat, so the reason for the increased mass is still unclear

Max Starks just signed a 4 yr. extension w/ the Steelers, so that frees up several nillion in cap room this yr. Now they can get Heath Miller locked up long term a lot easier. I'm excited.

Rumors upon rumors about Favre coming to Minnesota. Praying its true....

Dude even Packer fans know favre is done, why would Vikings fans want him? I dont get it. Guy totally ruins the Jets season and you all still want him. Last year, i thought he might still be good and didnt want him on the vikes, but this year, i'll let you have him. Woodson and Harris will eat him alive and he'll get jeered out of Lambeau.

All Favre has to do is complete 10-12 passes a game for the Vikings. The general threat of having him will make defenses take guys out of the box and off of the line of scrimmage. Which means less guys for the Purple Jesus aka AP to have to dodge.

The Vikes have been practicing the Wild Cat O with Percy Harvin as a QB.

Should be fun to watch this year in the North.
