| I was at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yvu0PMQMB8s. Wright hit the go-ahead RBI over Johnny Damon's head, then Wagner came in and K'd all three batters to close it out. One of the best games I've ever attended. |

| What a horrible trade... On December 5, 2006, during the MLB Winter Meetings, Bannister was traded from the New York Mets to the Kansas City Royals for relief pitcher Ambiorix Burgos to help strengthen the Mets' bullpen. Bannister's father Floyd pitched for the Royals for two seasons from 1988-1989. |

| Pedro Martinez: Throws Simulated Game Update: Martinez (hamstring) threw 77 pitches in a simulated game on Monday, and plans to throw a bullpen session Wednesday or Thursday, according to the Associated Press. Recommendation: Martinez could return to the Mets within the next two weeks if he progresses as he should. |

Double header today...would be a huge step in the right direction for the Mets if they took the momentum from the ass whoopin they laid down in the Bronx and carried it over into Atlanta. |

| Mets do suck--- you think Willie should be fired? Yanks blow too-- Boston looks stronggggggggg |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops May 23 2008, 09:03 AM |
| I think Willie should be fired, yes. I understand that it's not him in the batter's box, or on the mound...but this team needs some sort of change to spark them. They've got tons of talent and are flat-out not playing to their potential, not even close. They need someone to come in and fire them up. The problem is, there's no solid choice out there. They'd probably promote Jerry Manuel (bench coach) and then mull their options during the off-season. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 May 23 2008, 09:50 AM |
| If Willie gets fired then Joe Girardi should be fired too. They're just as bad if not worse with a higher payroll. |

Hopefully we can push a few runs across and get a W while you're there. Pelfrey, for all his faults, never gets any run support. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jun 1 2008, 01:13 AM |
| Awesome comeback today. The seats we had were good. Field level over by RF, close to the beer vendor and Nathans hot dogs. Was a pretty boring game until the Mets finally broke through and dropped loads on tubby Broxton. Beltran hit a bomb that almost hit the scoreboard. Great win. Wagner blew they away, struck out the side and dropped a major load on Joe Torre. Good times. Free cap day too. Not a bad hat for it being free. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jun 1 2008, 10:22 PM |
| Big win tonight to take 3 out of 4. Church's is finally back and dropping loads once again!! Beltran dropped a huge load as well. |

| Whats up with the Mets fans chanting Bobby V's name? |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jun 11 2008, 09:56 AM |
| Probably because they suck and want him to come back. |
| Posted by: azfittrainer Jun 11 2008, 10:16 AM |
| I could be wrong, but I think Willie has about the same winning percentage that Bobby had. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jun 11 2008, 10:19 AM |
| I like Willie. It's not his fault. The players haven't performed to their expectations. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Jun 11 2008, 08:33 PM |
| I'd LOVE Bobby V to come back, but from everything I read, he's really happy in Japan, don't think he'd leave unless someone offered him some serious jack. He's a strong personality, that's for sure. Could use his fire and passion. Wagner.....WHAT THE FUCK??? Dude had 1 earned run all year before Saturday, now he's completely fuckig us!!! AAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!! |

| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jun 12 2008, 08:46 AM |
| Kinda but too bad it doesn't matter, they lost. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Jun 12 2008, 09:13 AM | ||||
Kinda like that one...except Beltran's bomb won the game. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jun 12 2008, 03:36 PM |
| Way to go Wagner. Way to blow the game again to the Douche Backs. |
| Posted by: azfittrainer Jun 12 2008, 04:23 PM |
| I'm going to vote Wagner for the All Star, he's helped the D-Backs win almost as many games as our closer has. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Jun 12 2008, 07:54 PM |
| Dude hadn't let up an earned run all year till last week, now he's blown 3 straight. Fuckin killing me this team. Willie needs to be fired immediately. He took Pelfrey out after 8 shutout innings, bullpen almost blew the game. Today he took out The Best Pitcher In Baseball after 7 shutout innings and the 'pen DID blow the game. Wilpon should tell him "you've got 30 minutes...pack your shit and get the fuck outta here" tonight. |
| Posted by: azfittrainer Jun 12 2008, 09:17 PM |
| The Mets are just catching the Snakes as they are coming out of their slump. Reynolds is finally hitting well again. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Jun 12 2008, 09:20 PM | ||
Shitty timing for us Mets fans though. Right when we needed to turn a corner and get our shit together...more implosion. Actually...I don't even know. I'm not sure it's the D-Backs "coming out of a slump" so much as it's Willie pulling hot pitchers and Wagner flat-out tanking. Either way, depressing times for us fans of the Amazins. |
| Posted by: azfittrainer Jun 12 2008, 09:23 PM |
| I don't understand why fans are hating on Willie. I don't think Bobby V would have done much better in the circumstances. You want to blame someone, blame your GM |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Jun 12 2008, 09:28 PM | ||
Whatever Bobby V would or wouldn't be doing is purely speculation. I like him because he's got tons of energy, passion, etc...which is pretty much what this team is lacking. Plus, he's a flat out solid coach, a winner. Just won his 1500th game actually. Anyhoo, I'm pissed at Willie (this week) because he pulled Pelfrey, who was cruising through 8 shutout innings...and the 'pen ruined it. So what does he do today? Pulls Johan freaking Santana after 7 dominant innings....and the 'pen ruined it. Isn't that the definition of insanity? Doing the same things over and over, yet expecting a different result. I know they had 114 and 116 pitches respectively...but I think people are pussies with that pitch count shit. These aren't 48 year old Jaime Moyers we're talking about. It's a young kid and a dominator in his prime. If they're hot (which both were) let em nail it down and finish what they started. It's not like either of them were in trouble or falling apart at all. idk...just my frustrated 2 cents. |
| Posted by: azfittrainer Jun 12 2008, 09:32 PM |
| I don't get NY fans, they loved Torie, because he was so stoic, but they hate Willie, for being stoic. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Jun 12 2008, 09:43 PM | ||
Don't get Yanks fans confused with Met fans. Hard to describe and it sounds kinda silly...but we're two entirely different breeds. At the end of the day, winning is all that matters. If we were rattling off victories, no one would give a fuck how stoic Willie was. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jun 13 2008, 12:55 AM |
| I'm at a loss really. Fucking terrible. |
| Posted by: azfittrainer Jun 13 2008, 11:52 AM |
| I imagine if they brought back Bobby V, and the Met were doing badly, they'd probably chant someone elses name too. Willie has to deal with a team with some aging players, and not the most solid bull pen. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jun 14 2008, 12:48 AM |
| Finally, a fucking win! |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Jun 15 2008, 02:19 PM |

| Game 1 - Nice comeback at the end. Too little too late. Fucking bullpen blew it giving up extra runs. Game 2 - Didn't see the game but glad Pedro got the win. Huge pinch hit from Cancel who used to play in the Atlantic League not too far from me. Wagner finally getting shit in order picking up the save. Won the series. That's all you can ask for at this point. |

| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jun 17 2008, 08:54 AM |
| Poor Willie. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Jun 17 2008, 09:01 AM | ||
That's so funny, cuz I was thinking the same thing. As much as I've railed against him and called for his ouster...I'll definitely miss him. We've had some good years under Willie. I hope the next guy (Manuel for now, after that who knows) can help get the Mets back on top. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jun 17 2008, 09:04 AM |
| I've never been a proponent of calling for a managers head when a team is underachieving. He is not the one playing. He is not the one giving up late inning homeruns to squander leads. I'm sorry but if a team cannot hold a 4+ run lead with 2 innings to go that is not the managers fault. If you want to fire Willie just to shake things up then fine. Or maybe the team didn't like him and didn't want to play for him, who knows. I just don't buy that he wasn't doing a good job. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Jun 17 2008, 09:26 AM |
| I hear ya man, and I've had this same conversation with like 10 people in the past 2 weeks. The thing is though...when IS it OK to fire a manager? He'll never be the one standing in the batter's box, striking out with guys in scoring position. He'll never be the one on the mound, giving up runs in relief. When a team is full of talent and has a high payroll...and then that team doesn't achieve...someone's gonna have to go. You know it wasn't going to be Omar, and "you can't fire the players" so everyone knew it was Willie's time. They fired "Mr. Untouchable" Rick Peterson too. Good. The guys got his pitchers throwing blindfolded and with their off-hand and shit. Eff that...our bullpen guys need to learn how to get guys out, not how throw a curveball while standing on one foot. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jun 17 2008, 09:43 AM |
| Let's see what happens now. I highly doubt the managerial change will make Delgado a .300 hitter with 35+ HR's. Suddenly Endy Chavez and Damion Easley will be all star outfielders. Maine will be lights out again. Their bullpen will be the talk of MLB. Alou and Church will miraculously heal from their injuries and have awesome 2nd halfs. I hope I'm wrong though. |
| Posted by: azfittrainer Jun 17 2008, 03:23 PM |
| The same thing happened to Bob Brenly during their horrific '04 season. It wasn't Brenlys fault they could hit with RISP, or that the bullpen was dog shit. It's not Willie fault either that Delgado isn't hitting and that the GM over paid for an injury prone Alou. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jun 20 2008, 08:42 PM |
| Mets just dropped 5 loads on the Rockies in the top of the 2nd. Fucking Maine better hold this lead. |

| Ahh shit, you posted in here. Now they're going to lose these series. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jul 23 2008, 08:47 AM | ||
It's all JW's fault last night. Why pull out Santana? Only 105 pitches if you want to get into that stupid shit. And the Mets are 1 of 5 teams not to have a CG yet this year. Bad move Manuel. Especially with Wagner out. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Jul 23 2008, 09:36 AM | ||
Agreed. 10 game win streak aside, our starters and Wagner have been solid. Everyone in between? Not so much. Johan isn't exactly Jaime Moyer. Dude can throw 120+ pitches and be fine for his next start. Effing ridiculous. |
| Posted by: Arnoldclone Jul 23 2008, 09:52 AM |
| Nice game last night pussies. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jul 23 2008, 10:04 AM |
| 105 is nothing. You have a 4 run lead. Throw him in the 9th, see how he does with the 1st batter, play it by ear. You never know, it could be a 9 pitch inning. If he struggles then bring in the relief. At least there's no doubt that way. |
| Posted by: Arnoldclone Jul 23 2008, 10:23 AM | ||
Its the bullpens job to close out a game with a 4 run lead. No need to beat up on an ACE with that big of a lead. 1 run yes, but 4 run? He made the right move. The bullpen didnt. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jul 23 2008, 10:25 AM |
| I'm not making an excuse for the bullpen, they sucked for sure. 105 pitches is NOTHING for an ace. This whole pitch count shit is overrated. Let the guy finish the damn game. Had it been 105 through 7 innings that may be a bit different. |
| Posted by: potential87 Jul 23 2008, 10:26 AM | ||
Unfortunatly 100 pitches is a max. I hate seeing a great performance ruined or stopped because of a pitch count. You have to play to win each game. If santana blows the next game oh well. Case n point why you cannot let an unreliable bullpen lose what could be a easier victory |
| Posted by: Arnoldclone Jul 23 2008, 10:31 AM | ||||
Yeah 100 as been the line for years...Anymore and its getting up there..The only time its normal is when pitchers like dicek, whos used to throwing tons, and wake, who doesnt throw hard. Other than that, the bullpen needs to take over and get their starter, and their team, the win. |
| Posted by: potential87 Jul 23 2008, 10:34 AM |
| yeah, I dont agree with it all the time, but if the bullpen is solid take that approach. If you dont trust them sometimes an extra 15 wont hurt. Im not saynig turn santana into a work horse, but no one sucks it up anymore |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jul 23 2008, 10:41 AM |
| That's why I said play it by ear. Throw him out there and see what happens. He the 1st guy gets on ok pull him. That was a must win game too. I know it's only July but every game counts. Especially when you're up 4 and a win puts you in 1st place. |
| Posted by: potential87 Jul 23 2008, 10:49 AM | ||
The NL/AL east is very competitive. Every game becomes must win right after the all-star break. When its a division battle you play it like the NLCS. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jul 24 2008, 09:28 PM |
| Nice rebound to take the next 2 games. Oliver with 12K's today! Wagner blowing them away for the 2nd straight game. 1st place!!! |

| Posted by: willpiazza31 Jul 27 2008, 08:57 PM |
| Now this is how an ACE talks... “We needed that big,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “He was very adamant about going back out. He really wanted the complete game.” 118 pitches... ain't shit... |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Aug 6 2008, 04:11 PM |
| "Heilman has blown 13 of the 19 save opportunities he has been given, and based on Manuel’s comments after the game, it may be a while before he gets another chance at closing." |

| It wasn't even a save opp and he STILL almost blew the game...guy is garbage. If we're up by 3 or less in the 9th, who throws...Sanchez? Kunz? |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Aug 6 2008, 04:53 PM |
| Heilman had a good stretch this year...it lasted like 2 weeks. The rest of the time, the guy has been effing horrendous. Last night wasn't even a save opp and he STILL almost blew the game. If we're up by 3 or less in the 9th, who throws? Gotta be Smith or Kunz, right? There's no way they trust Sanchez or Heilman with the 9th at this point. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Aug 6 2008, 05:05 PM |
| They all suck. I really don't trust any of them. It'll have to be batter by batter I guess. They really should've fucking made a run at Brian Fuentes. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Aug 6 2008, 07:33 PM | ||
Fuckin A right! This Fernando Martinez guy better be as good as he's been made out to be. We could've made a run at Holliday or Fuentes, but Omar won't budge on any deal that involves F-Mart. Other than giving up the two solo dingers in the 1st, Pedro is looking decent today. Now we just gotta get him some damn run support! |

Getting moved down to the minors would be the opposite of an MVP. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Aug 31 2008, 02:22 PM |
| Heilman blows. Look at Beltran injecting himself into the MVP discussion all-of-a-sudden. Carlos Delgado .260BA, 30HR, 93RBI, 75R Jose Reyes .306BA, 13HR, 55RBI, 97R, 45SB David Wright .292BA, 26HR, 102RBI, 95R, 14SB Carlos Beltran .273BA, 23HR, 91RBI, 93R, 19SB (not sure if these stats reflect today's #'s) |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Aug 31 2008, 11:24 PM |
| Beltran and Wright with another bomb. Pedro somehow kept them baffled. Anything we get from him is a freakin bonus. Bullpen threw a few scoreless. I think the September callups will help that overworked bullpen tremendously. |

| Beltran with a huge bomb and outfield assist. Endy with a huge outfield assist as well. Looking good so far. Niese got bombed though. Hopefully he'll turn out to be a decent pitcher. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Sep 3 2008, 11:48 AM | ||
I think Endy led the NL in outfield assists in '06 or '07, despite not even starting. Looks like Beltran's knee is fine from colliding with that umpire at home the other day. How about Reyes letting Beltran's throw go 5-hole in order to gun Hardy at home??? Sick! |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Sep 3 2008, 11:50 AM |
| Endys got a cannon. Fine player. I didn't see the behind scenes on that throw because I missed the game. Both were huge plays though. Bullpen throwing scoreless innings. I like that. Day game today! Get the broom out nigs!!! |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Sep 3 2008, 01:28 PM |
| Ryan Church has been friggin awesome everytime he's on the field for us. If this 6-0 lead holds up, we got ourselves a sweep of the Brew Crew!!! |

| New York Mets closer Billy Wagner needs elbow surgery that will sideline him through the 2009 season. The five-time All-Star has been sidelined since Aug. 3. He has a torn medial collateral ligament in his left elbow and a torn flexor pronator, which is a muscle in the forearm. The Mets said Monday that Wagner will have surgery later this week. Wagner, a 37-year-old left-hander, is owed $10.5 million next year, the final guaranteed season in $43 million, four-year contract with the Mets. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Sep 8 2008, 03:20 PM |
| I don't care much about losing Wagner (we're already in 1st place, and lets be honest...how much confidence did you have in him in tight situations in late Sept or Oct?) the only thing that sucks is that we still have to pay him for next year. Coulda used that $ and gotten ourselves some other bullpen help. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Sep 8 2008, 03:26 PM |
| Yeah but he's got some sick shit. When he's on he's almost unhittable. And I think those blown saves he had this year could be due to his arm being fucked up. It's not a crazy assumption. But if they somehow find someone better or the same as Wagner next year I'm all for it. Closers like him do not grow on trees. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Sep 8 2008, 03:29 PM |
| I'm with ya...and I've always been a big Wagner fan, but he's 37 and now he's on the shelf for this season AND all of next season...so we've gotta start looking around, cuz 39 year old guys who are "almost unhittable" don't grow on trees. Again, I hope this F-Mart farmer is as good as they say, cuz we DEFINITELY coulda gotten bullpen help (maybe Fuentes) had Omar been willing to give him up. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Sep 8 2008, 03:33 PM |
| Well I was talking as if we still had him for next year not hurt. He may just retire after the surgery next year. I don't think he can make a living after this surgery by not throwing gas. Pitchers almost never have the same velocity after this kind of surgery. I don't think money is a problem for them. They'll spend it if need be. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Sep 8 2008, 03:53 PM | ||

Dock Ellis pitched a no no on LSD in 1970 ![]() "I can only remember bits and pieces of the game. I was psyched. I had a feeling of euphoria. I was zeroed in on the (catcher's) glove, but I didn't hit the glove too much. I remember hitting a couple of batters and the bases were loaded two or three times. The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn't. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. They say I had about three to four fielding chances. I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn't hit hard and never reached me" "Attempting to hit every batter in the Cincinnati Reds lineup on May 1, 1974. In an effort to prove a point to teammates, Ellis hit Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Dan Driessen in the top of the first. The clean-up batter Tony Perez avoided Ellis' attempts, instead drawing a walk, and after two pitches aimed at the head of Johnny Bench, Ellis was removed from the game by manager Danny Murtaugh. Ellis' box score for the game reads: 0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K." Dude was a beauty |

BUMP!!! Hahahahaha Seriously...it's not easy being a Met fan. TONS of ups and downs, but true fans stick with their teams no matter what. I saw a fan at Shea with a sign that said "THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES AND THE ULCERS"...I think that summed it up best. So...who's available to pick up? We obviously need pitching, and everyone thinks Sabathia is going to the Yanks. Is Pedro under contract for next year? We should make a play for K-Rod and/or Fuentes. Other than that, a corner OF'er and 2B and we're set up nicely. But really....1 solid starting arm and a couple decent arms outta the pen is what we NEED. Omar's got his work cut out for him. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Sep 30 2008, 12:41 PM |
| I have no idea who's available. They need a closer and a setup man. They also can't rely on Alou anymore. They need to improve the corner OF positions with some speed and a little bit of power. |

Word...I think Fuentes and K-rod are in the last year of their deals. How sick would a Fuentes 8th and a K-Rod 9th be? Don't know if we've got the unlimited fund$ to do it...but damn, that'd be awesome. Yeah...Alou should (if he hasn't already) retire. I'm fine with Church in RF...just need a LF'er. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Sep 30 2008, 03:19 PM |
| What's the deal with Jason Bay? Free agent? That's the kind of guy we need in LF. Is there a list of the players that will be free agents anywhere online? |

| NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Mets scheduled a telephone news conference for Thursday to announce a new contract for general manager Omar Minaya. Minaya became general manager after the 2005 season and was given a four-year contract. The Mets made it to Game 7 of the NL championship series in his first season but were eliminated from postseason contention on the last day of the regular season in 2007 and this year. After Minaya’s deal is finalized, the Mets likely will turn their attention to a contract for Jerry Manuel, who became interim manager in June when Willie Randolph was fired. |

Buddy of mine said the Mets have $45mil coming off the books in the form of Alou, Pedro and El Duque's contracts....that should free us up to make a move or two. Obviously, the bullpen is top priority. A Fuentes 8th and K-Rod 9th would be sick, but in reality, we'll have to choose 1 of the 2. K-Rod's asking price will be very high, following his record-setting year. Omar might try to make a big splash by signing him anyway. LF - Would be extremely hard to sign Manny, if we're going to pay for bullpen help as well. My guess is the Yankees will wind up overpaying for him. Manny IS a Scott Boras client after all. We could take a flier on Raul Ibanez perhaps. He's hit 20+HR and had 100+RBI for 3 years straight. If we could sign him to a 1-2 year deal, that would be OK. RF - I'm fine with Church staying there. Solid bat, solid glove. 2B - This x-mas list is getting long. Hopefully Argenis Reyes will step up. I've also heard rumors that Daniel Murphy might get a shot there. SP - Would love to get another solid arm in the rotation, but again...I'm guessing the Yanks will pay an astronomical sum for Sabathia. I heard his starting offer was $200mil. Hard to pay him AND Johan and whoever else we sign for the bullpen/LF. |

| Garret Anderson: Likely Leaving the Angels Update: The Angels declined their 2009 option on Anderson, the Orange County Register reports. Recommendation: With Vlad Guerrero, Torii Hunter, Juan Rivera and Gary Matthews Jr. already in tow, Anderson became the odd-man out as the team looks to make a push to retain Mark Teixeira this winter. Even if their efforts to return the slugging first baseman fail, Anderson appears destined to leave the franchise that he’s spent his entire career with thus far. Hmm... think he'll be a good fit on the Mets? Provides 15 HR's 80 RBI's with a nice average close to .300. He'll be 37 though. |

| My buddy is a big Mets fan, but hasn't had time to keep up with Spring Training or the WBC, so he asked me to write up a preview of the '09 squad. Here it is... The Lineup 1. Jose Reyes 2. Luis Castillo 3. David Wright 4. Carlos Delgado 5. Carlos Beltran 6. Ryan Church 7. Daniel Murphy 8. Brian Schneider Top of the order: Lotta talk about Jose potentially batting 3rd, but I can't see Manuel batting him anywhere other than the top of the lineup. The same old issues remain this year for Castillo (can he stay healthy?) so we've picked up veteran Alex Cora to back him up. Heart of the order: Wright is a stud. He hurt his toe in the WBC, but he's been playing through the pain and will be fine for Opening Day. Pencil him in for at least .300, 30 and 100, as always. We all know how 2008 went for Delgado (godawful first half, damn-near MVP second half) and it seems like he's on track for a solid year, after batting .438 (.625 OBP!) for Puerto Rico in the WBC. Beltran could bat 2nd, 3rd or 5th, depending on what Manuel decides on any given day. He too had a solid WBC, batting .421 with a .542 OBP. He says he feels completely healthy, which is great, considering the knee issues he's had. Bottom of the order: If Church can stay healthy, look for him to surpass his career high in RBI (70) with all the "ducks on the pond" he should have waiting for him. Hopefully there are no lingering effects from the badass concussion he suffered last year. VERY interesting move on Manuel's part by declaring Daniel Murphy the starting left fielder, rather than having him compete with Tatis for the position during spring training, April, etc. The organization is very high on this young man...hopefully he steps up and proves that he deserves the spot. Schneider is who he is. We all know what to expect from him. Castro is backing him up again this year. Rotation 1. Johan Santana 2. Mike Pelfrey 3. Oliver Perez 4. John Maine 5. Livan Hernandez I'm guessing about the rotation order to be honest with you, but I know that the organization is expecting Pelfrey to make "the leap" this year and be a total badass. Johan has been dealing with elbow tightness, but it looks like he'll be ready to start on Opening Day. The fight for the 5th spot was between Jonathan Niese, Freddy Garcia, Tim Redding and Livan "El Duque's brother" Hernandez. Redding got hurt, Garcia has looked like crap all spring...that only leaves Niese to compete with Livan. Niese is a rookie and hasn't blown anyone away with his pitching this spring. He hasn't been Garcia-bad, but Livan's looked better and will likely get the nod. Bullpen K-Rod is gonna close, of course. He's looked pretty damn solid for Venezuela in the WBC, striking out 8 batters in 3 appearances, not letting up a single earned run. Putz is gonna be the 8th inning setup man. He had a rough outing against Canada in the WBC, but I wouldn't worry about it. Russell Martin and Justin Morneau (certified studs) got hits off him, but it's wayyyy early and Putz will settle in and be fine. We should have the best 8th-9th inning combo in MLB. Pedro Feliciano is back, hopefully he can get back to his 2006-2007 form. Sean Green is a guy we got in the Putz deal from Seattle. He's young, he's 6' 6" and supposedly the owner of a wicked slider. It's gonna be up to him, Feliciano and Stokes/Muniz/Parnell (whoever emerges) to be the middle-relief bridge from the starters to PutzRod. (I just made that up, and I'm gonna run with it) Injuries Tim Redding (shoulder soreness) Not sure when he'll be back. Might compete for the 5th spot in the rotation or provide some long relief. Brian Schneider (knee inflammation) He's day-to-day, should be fine. Angel Pagan (elbow ligament damage) Out till mid-May. David Wright (broken toenail) Golden Boy is a stud, he'll play through it. Billy Wagner (Tommy John) He's out all year. JDub's Opinion I feel like we're gonna be the tits. You look at the names on paper and it's stud after stud. We shouldn't have any trouble scoring runs. Our defense should be pretty stellar. The arms we have starting and in the pen are pretty goddamn boss too. I want to win 100 games this year. I want to decimate the Phillies. The big "ifs" for us are: Will Delgado provide the same level of production he had the second half of last year? Will the starters give us enough quality innings to get the ball to PutzRod? Will Castillo will be able to keep his knees healthy enough to play (effectively) everyday? Will Daniel Murphy be a stud, a bum, or somewhere in between? Then, there's the perennial, "if we're healthy" thing...if we are, we should be pretty sick. But then again, I think that every year... |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Mar 22 2009, 06:37 PM |
| That's quite the writeup, nice job. I'm "worried" about O Perez. He looked shit pitching for Mexico. And Maine has been throwing BP in Spring Training. Of course that doesn't mean much. If those 2 are ON, Santana is Santana, Pelfrey shows he belongs in the majors, and if we can get hopefully get 25 wins combined from the 4th and 5th starters then I'll be happy. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Mar 22 2009, 06:41 PM |
| I'm with you on Maine, he needs to get back to his '06-'07 form. I'm confident in Pelfrey though. He took a big step forward last year and I think he'll continue to progress this year. He's only like 25 years old, right? Ugh...."good Ollie" and "bad Ollie"...I'm sick of that shit. Wish he would just pick an arm slot, stick with it and find some consistency. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Mar 22 2009, 06:43 PM |
| We might get lucky with Livan. We know he throws a lot of innings, I just hope they're not the 6 or 7IP, 4-5 ER kind. |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Mar 22 2009, 06:45 PM | ||
Yeah, eating those innings will be great for us, as long as the offense can carry him to PutzRod time. |
| Posted by: willpiazza31 Mar 22 2009, 06:47 PM |
| I heard Castillo lost some weight. I hope he does something this year otherwise I'll start calling him "supplements". |
| Posted by: JW32Hoops Mar 22 2009, 06:48 PM | ||
Giving his broken down knees a 4 year contract was a bad move on Minaya's part. I hope he lost some weight, hit the swiss ball hard in the off season and is ready to produce this year. |

| http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2009/03/jose_reyes_daniel_murphy_to_ba.html Looks like Murphy will bat 2nd, sending Castillo to the bottom of the order. Beltran at cleanup rather than Delgado too. |
