Let me start it off.

Obviously, we were allowed to be created by some "force" of nature. Or was it freak coincidence?

Talk away....

I believe you're right...it's definitely one or the other. I'm just not so arrogant to presume I know the answer to this question. Are the Catholics right? Are the Buddhists wrong? What about the Jews or the Hindi? The Earth and everything else in the universe was created, perhaps by an omniscient being, perhaps not...I just can't claim to know that answer.

What The Fuck

laugh.gif

I have no clue how we came about... I doubt anyone really does. It's hard to imagine the universe as we know it always existing. But, if there was a beginning, who was the creator?

I'll tell you one thing... it sure as fuck wasn't God, Jesus, Muhammad, Ra, Zeus, or any other man-made analogue of the stars.

I don't like combining 'religion' with 'where did we come from'. The two aren't mutually inclusive.

I believe we aren't supposed to "know". Whatever guides you to your faith or lack there of isn't proven right or wrong by anyone.

No one knows more than the next person. We are equally ignorant for that matter.

If anything, doesn't science tend to sway more towards the belief of a, "creator"???

Maybe. But, I think science is more in line with a 'beginning' (like the Big Bang theory), not necessarily with a 'creator'.

It is something that has troubled my mind for quite awhile. When I finally discarded the wool that was covering my eyes, I became curious, scared, unsure, etc. That is not a coincidence. wink.gif

Believing and a higher deity feels good, doesn't it?

Posted by: joseph23573 May 9 2008, 10:09 AM
Believing in "God" is basically universal, eh?

Therefore, are we pre-programmed to believe in an almighty, or is it some justification to alleve one's self of the dreaded "cease of existence"

Or, are we given a spirit, something non tangiable, like our bodies, which is an energy that we cannot explain?

Keep this going, this is good.

Fear of the unknown may be innate, IMO. This lends itself to the religious "why's".

I am more inline w/ the 'spirit' concept. Some higher, undetectable energy of sorts. How that plays out in the physical world, I have no idea.

There was a time when we couldn't detect microwaves, gamma rays, UV light, etc. That, obviously, doesn't mean it didn't exist. wink.gif

We can get philosophical on this, or stay with the physicalness. Or both. I like it.

umm yeah, Shakes, I agree with what you said. We are only human, we cannot detect "everything". By the time we figure some of those questions out, using the 7th grade science diagram JW provided, it may be too late.

The way things are going, existence could be destroyed or mamed.

Far from lost brother. I know exactly what I believe, and I believe religion is the root of all evil. Every single war ever fought was tied to religion. Granted not everyone who follows a religion will skew it to that extreme, but the ones who start the wars will. One side says they're doing God's work and the other side says the same thing. Both sides can't be right. If religion gives people strength, hope, peace, and whatever then that's great. Unfortunately too many powerful people use it to their advantage and here we are today.

I'm a huge space nerd who likes to research quantum theories and ponder the existance of the universe. I'm wholly anti-ignorance. That's hard to say as it is true, the more you learn, the more you realize how much you really don't know what the fuck is going on. I like to think we're capable, compassionate creatures on an infinitely higher level of existance than anything else on this planet. I mean, it's pretty obvious what we've done vs. the next most capable creatures afforded us.

With the trillions upon infinite trillions of variables that had to be put into place for our existance to prosper at all, it's hard for me to believe that it's just "one in a googolplex". But hell, it could be, too. If our planet has existed for billions of years and the only thing we can recover from our planet's history is dinosaur bones, that kinna gives you an idea how big the universe is and how unlikely it is for us to go spelunking about it.

There's light, matter, energy, anti-matter, dark-matter, gravity. And yet still millions of things out there that we're still trying to figure out. Science, much like many religions, are honestly overstepping their grounds to try and predict the begining of existance or the end of such. But we're humans, I could see it being within our comprehension to eventually "figure it out".

I tend not to fear the unknown, I seek it out with a vengeance as it is one of the few things left in life I still find exciting. Nothing is more empty than feeling like there's nothing left to do, accomplish, see or experience. There's too much for one life-time so it's impossible to worry about that. There's a point to figuring out where we came from. Maybe it'll give us purpose. Maybe it won't. Would it really change anything? Would it really nullify religion? What do we honestly have to benefit? The technological leaps that have been made in certain areas of technology surrounding this research have been applied to soooo many other applications. Think of all the leaps and bounds in optical technology? Ways in which we've begun to utilize light for transmitting data. I didn't realize how awesome a surround sound system could be until I heard an optical audio cable streaming 7.1 digital audio. Breaking of glass sounds like it's really there. Little shit like that fascinates the fuck out of me.

Not true. Civil War had nothing to do with religion. Religion isn't a begin-all, end-all to humanity.

We may never see 'the light of day' by the time we extinguish ourselves from Earth.

Survival is the primary motivation for any human being, whether conscious or unconscious. And survival of oneself seems to supersede the survival of the species. Backwards, if you ask me.

But, back on topic... I'm still learning. I'm open to all possibilities, even religious-based ones. Yes, that goes against my earlier posts where I pretty much said fuck all to religion. That was just me being stupid.

My main concern is when people follow blindly and are unaccepting of anything that goes against what they have been 'taught'.

Posted by: Roids May 9 2008, 10:50 AM
I believe that religion is as much a part of human behavior as fleeing, fighting, and fucking. Every civilization on earth, dating back to neanderthals, has had some form of religion. Humans are inherently aware of some sort of supreme being or force in the universe that is greater than ourselves. Religion is the natural human response when humans are faced with a phenomenon that can't be fully understood. Religion evolved from people simply making up stories to try and explain things that they can not understand. Doesn't mean there's no creator. It just means that there is some shit out there that we don't understand and the answers are not in the bible, tauro, qoran, etc.

Great posts Ftank. Good contributions.

If we were created by some "force", then, wouldn't that "force" perpetually not allow us to know the truth? That would give us beings too much power IMO.

Roids, we aren't SUPPOSED to know. You are given a choice in life to accept it or not.

Good points Roids. So is it beliefs based upon unknown and fears, or an innate GIFT to be aware of a creator??? hmmmm

Accountability has been a huge focal point for a buddy and I's conversations regarding his girlfriend. Lack of accountability for an individual's actions putting them where they are today. It's not everyone else's fault or everyone else's problem that you put yourself into thousands of dollars of debt or you're running around with an abusive significant other. Or that you get drunk downtown and get into questionable situations.

It's not God's fault for war. It's a group of people seeking out an objective, 99% of the time that objective being someone else's land. Not fucking religious pursuits. That's just gibblty-gob political leaders feed the ignorant masses into believing. It's easier to scape-goat a religion than it is to take personal accountability.

If our President originally said, "We're gunna go fuck Saddam in the ass for persecuting his people for no good reason," I'd be like, "Well, good, fuck em'. We're already setup for retort against Al Qaeda (ironically who we originally funded anyway), why not double over? They're right next to each other." Instead we were fed BS and mislead. I think accountability was finally named, but never focused on because the media doesn't care about the good, only the strife and conflict. Notice how no one ever looks fucking good on TV? I wonder why that is....

Joe: I think it is an innate gift that goes with human intelligence. We're capable of the awarenessm, but not able to understand due to the limitations of human intelligence.

I believe religion, at least some forms of it, have had some positive influences on humanity. Teaching kindness and goodwill are always good, no matter under which pretense it is presented.

Also, I believe one thing supersedes every other thought I have... the "Golden Rule".

Paraphrased... Do to others as you would have others do to you.

But, I'm still working on my nasty habit for harboring re/vengeful feelings.

If God loves us, why are so many people in the world suffering? Is God loving?

Deductive reasoning is such a fallacy. And it correlates to my original point of accountability. Religion is "meant" to be good. It's people who interpret it in order to further their means, just like the Constitution has been in the past. Again, it's the person or people, not the religion. Religion is an intangible thing. I don't understand how people can think it makes anyone do anything.
