Anabolic steroids are a class of steroid hormones related to the hormone testosterone. They increase protein synthesis within cells, which results in the buildup of cellular tissue (anabolism), especially in muscles. Anabolic steroids also have androgenic and virilizing properties, including the development and maintenance of masculine characteristics such as growth of the vocal cords and body hair. Anabolic steroids were first isolated, identified and synthesized in the 1930s, and are now used therapeutically in medicine to stimulate bone growth and appetite, induce male puberty, and treat chronic wasting conditions, such as cancer and AIDS. Anabolic steroids also produce increases in muscle mass and physical strength, and are consequently used in sport and bodybuilding to enhance strength or physique. Serious health risks can be produced by long-term use or excessive doses of anabolic steroids. These effects include harmful changes in cholesterol levels (increased low-density lipoprotein and decreased high-density lipoprotein), acne, high blood pressure, liver damage, and dangerous changes in the structure of the left ventricle of the heart. The use of anabolic steroids is banned by all major sporting bodies. Anabolic steroids are controlled substances in many countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Argentina and Brazil, while in other countries, such as Mexico and Thailand, they are freely available. Here is the part that makes me laugh everytime.

"Serious health risks can be produced by long-term use or excessive doses of anabolic steroids". And then they list "acne" and most of the time they also list hairloss as a serious health risk. give me a break.

Major potential adverse side effects from taking anabolic steroids include liver tumors and cancer, jaundice, high blood pressure, increase in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, enlarged heart, heart attacks, strokes, and flying into rages. Other side effects include severe acne, baldness, oily scalp and skin, and mood swings.

Men who take anabolic steroids may also develop breasts, have their testicles shrink, have decreased sperm count, become infertile, and become impotent.

And now for the interesting part. There has never been a stand alone study of steroids. So my qustion is how do they no for sure that steroids cause these effects?

Here lets do a side by side comparison of a drug that gets NO look and steroids.

Steroids - Major potential adverse side effects from taking anabolic steroids include liver tumors and cancer, jaundice, high blood pressure, increase in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, enlarged heart, heart attacks, strokes, and flying into rages. Other side effects include severe acne, baldness, oily scalp and skin, and mood swings.

Men who take anabolic steroids may also develop breasts, have their testicles shrink, have decreased sperm count, become infertile, and become impotent.

Ibuprofen - Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•signs of bleeding - bruising, pinpoint red spots on the skin, black tarry stools, blood in the urine, unusual tiredness or weakness
•signs of an allergic reaction - difficulty breathing or wheezing, skin rash, redness, blistering or peeling skin, hives, or itching, swelling of eyelids, throat, lips
•blurred vision
•change in the amount of urine passed
•difficulty swallowing, severe heartburn or burning, pain in throat
•pain or difficulty passing urine
•stomach pain or cramps
•swelling of feet or ankles
•vomiting blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•diarrhea
•dizziness, drowsiness
•gas or heartburn
•headache
•nausea, vomiting

Definitely not true. Wikipedia is VERY reliable when it comes to tons of topics. Sure, we can edit something, but if it's a major article and you edit it to the point where something false may be written, Wikipedia will contact you and warn you.

As for this article, I have no clue if it's true or not because I didn't read it. Plus, the jury is still out on whether or not AAS has adverse long-term effects. I personally think they are way over-exaggerated.

I'm talking from an academic point of view, specifically the hard sciences. For example, I know many medical students and graduate students that use Wiki while studying to explain things in more layman's terms.
