I think it's the history...
SerraAs I'm sure you know, the UFC sponsors "The Ultimate Fighter" reality show. The way the show usually works is they bring in a bunch of fighters and at the season finale they award the winner a UFC contract.
A few seasons back they had some idea to bring back a bunch of mediocre fighters who had already fought in the UFC but managed to fail horribly...one of the fighters was Matt Serra.
Prior to the show, Serra only had 11 pro fights with 4 losses. 6 of those 11 fights came by way of decision...so Serra on
one hand had a reputation for going the distance but also seemed to be able to finish the fight via submission or knockout.
During the TUF Comeback, Serra established himself as a leader of the team he was on. I have to give him some props here, he was a great team player, always helping out and motivating everyone. Serra ended up beating Pete Spratt to earn a spot in the semi-finals. Pete Spratt is a 17-12-0 fighter...just to give you an idea of the opposition.
Semi-Final fight they put Serra up against Shonie Carter. Carter had already beat Serra during UFC 31 with a *very lucky* spinning back-fist...knocked Serra out COLD. So during the TUF Comeback matchup, Serra ends up beating Carter via DECISION. So the final matchup is Matt Serra vs. Chris Lytle (25-15-5).
I don't really remember the Serra vs. Lytle fight but Serra ended up winning via SPLIT DECISION. It was undoubtedly controversial. This earns Serra a
shot at the title.
GSPIt's hard to find people who dislike GSP. He had a rough childhood where he got his ass beat and his clothes stolen. He eventually turned to Karate. Unlike Mike Tyson who had a similar childhood, GSP is not a complete fuck-up. He epitomizes class. Dude is soft-spoken and seems like he usually is pretty respectful of his opponents. He is very technical, strategic and is always trying to improve his game.
He was undefeated until he had a title
shot against Matt Hughes in UFC 50. GSP had alot of respect for Hughes to the point where he kind of feared him...he was awe-struck by Hughes during the fight because he had always looked up to Hughes and admired him. Long story short, Hughes caught GSP in a submission and GSP tapped with 1 fucking second left on the clock!
After this, GSP went back to training...whipped 5 peoples asses before getting another
shot at Hughes at UFC 65. GSP utterly DESTROYED Hughes and was finally champ.
GSP meets Serra and the subsequent bullshitI'm not sure what the fuck happened during this fight...maybe GSP underestimated Serra or something but GSP ends up getting knocked the fuck out by Serra.
Serra became the champion.
The UFC decides to put Serra and Hughes as coaches of the next Ultimate Fighter show with plans of Serra and Hughes fighting at the end to give Hughes a chance to get the title back.
Serra claims he got hurt and was unable to fight Hughes. The UFC decides to put the title up for grabs in an interim fashion. Sean Sherk (lightweight champ) popped positive for steroids and was suspended by Nevada fight comission so they yanked his title and also put it up for grabs. BJ Penn ended up with the lightweight *interim* title.
Hughes and GSP fight for the welterweight interim title and Hughes gets his clock cleaned once again in an extraordinary fashion. GSP totally dominates the hell out of Hughes and Hughes has to VERBALLY submit because GSP has him so tighed up.
So GSP ends up with the title again and Serra comes back out of the woodwork and wants to solidify himself as the champion. Funny that Serra was injured for Hughes...did he
see this as a bad matchup?
In conclusionIn fighting, boxing...whatever. Everyone has a punching chance. You could put ANYONE up against
Rampage Jackson and maybe 1 in 1000 times they might catch him with a punch and knock him out. It doesn't mean that this person is rightfully the UFC champion. I think that's how alot of people felt about Serra beating GSP.
Before the fight, nobody in the fucking world thought for a millisecond that Serra could beat GSP...and he got lucky and that was the end of it.
Hopefully this cleared some shit up for you.
