Okay, so I've read that cardio first thing upon waking in the morning is the optimal fat-burning time. Is this true? Also, after I workout, I do about fifteen minutes of high intensity cardio since fat is supposed to be mobilized after a workout. My question is, should I take my post-workout shake right after my workout or wait til after my post-workout cardio to down my protein?

...I used to lift then do hiit for 30 secs on 30 secs off for 7 mins. This didn't really work out for me, so I ended up doing my hiit on non lifting days and seen better results...basically my times improved but since I was eating above maintenance, I didn't really shed much BF...Im sure if you eat below you'll burn fat and preserve muscle by doing the 2 (lifting and hiit) on separate days.

...all that and there is NO WAY I would be able to hold down a protein shake if I consumed it right before hiit...some people can, I cant.

I would wait till AFTER your cardio to replenish, kinda hard to do on a full stomach. I do cardio after liting, I read in M&F that cardio should be done after lifting becasue your depleated of your glucose and carb stores so your body turns to fat for energy.

and if you dont already, trow in a pre-workout protein shake to keep the muscles happy and maybe drink a Gatoraid or sumthin like it during your workout to keep energy levels from crashin.

Ill never be satisfied.

Is seven minutes of HIIT enough? I thought you would have to do 15-20 in order to see results.

I doubt many people on here are going to be able to do all out sprints for 30 seconds with 30 seconds of recovery for 15-20 minutes. That is some hardcore shit.

15 minutes is the upper limit it seems, if you can do more...you're not training hard enough, you need to add a hill to your routine, or try it on sand...parachutes work too.

hiit on a treadmill or elliptical machine != hiit

Fuck a treadmill or elliptical machine I say.

Just go outside and run in a parking lot or at the park.

Thanks for the info.....

Also, I've tried doing HIIT on an eliptical and a treadmill a few times. The ones at my gym dont have a setting for intervals, at least not to my knowledge, so I have to adjust the resistence manually for each interval. Im not lazy but doing that every 30 seconds is such a pain in the ass and time consuming. Is there something I'm missing?

That is how you have to do it on treadmills or ellipticals which is why I would rather just go outside and sprint/jog.

I much prefer to run outside vs. hopping along on a treadmill or using the quad-destroying elliptical.

If you are more into whole-body fitness than simply losing fat, you could try 'agility' drills. I've got a set of cones that I set out on a side street. I do shit like touch-and-go, touch-and-shuffle, etc. You can do all kinds of different stuff.

You can do that stuff w/out cones, but it helps to have a visual aid when your heart is going 170bpm. And, when I first started with that stuff, I just picked up some $.50 small funnels from Wal-Mart and turned them over - pretty cone-like.

Next purchase will be a 'chute.

Also, 'Figure-8s' around a tennis/basketball court will wear you out in 10 min.

Planning to start jumping out of planes? I don't suggest it. It's some scary shit.

I'm glad there isn't a breathalyzer for lactic acid....

LOL Actually, yes, I do plan on skydiving one of these days. You only live once.

I meant a sprint chute, but I suppose you knew that. wink.gif
