I was asked to recommend supplements for a 12 boy who is playing baseball. He is very healthy and wanting to build on what he has.

I recommended weight lifting. I started around 13 years old. The boy wants to get ready for football.

Supplements recommended:
Omega 369
Omega 3 fish oil
Multi Vitamin

He has knee problems- How about Cissus Quadrangularis? I love it. Has anyone out there had a youngster try it?

I do not know if I should recommend Beta-Alanine, CEE, AEE, Citt. Mal. etc.

Thank you to all.

Only thing I'd suggest is an amino acid complex. It will help the most with general recovery.

I'm glad there isn't a breathalyzer for lactic acid....

How tall is he? Remember weight training at such a young age can stunt growth!

Weight lifting does not stunt growth....I'd recommend a basic whey protein powder after his workout and a chewable vitamin or something along those lines. No need to get pricey, I would not recommend he take things like NO, Creatine, Cissus, Beta-Alanine, Cissus, etc. at his age. Fish oil isn't bad but I don't see the point of loading him up on caps at such a young age, he needs to be a kid and not worry about diet and supplements. Just train right and make healthier choices like instead of a piece of candy a piece of fruit, etc.

I'm not sure but isnt this the age for that growth spurt? If you like the kid then get him to do all the natural actions to support his GH levels, I wish I wouldve known back in 6th grade...ah well. He'll be way taller and his IGF levels will increase...NATURALLY!

Stimulators of GH secretion include:

* growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) from the arcuate nucleus
* ghrelin
* sleep
* exercise
* low levels of blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
* dietary protein
* estradiol
* arginine[3]

Inhibitors of GH secretion include:

* somatostatin from the periventricular nucleus
* circulating concentrations of GH and IGF-1 (negative feedback)
* hyperglycemia
* glucocorticoid

(WIKIPEDIA ROCKS)

++++++ nutrition and all that, maybe bodyweight excercises...

I told his mom about whey and she was really excited. That is until she saw the prices on whey.

I do like the suggestion because whey comes in chocolate. I do not think that he will turn down chocolate.

I second the wish that someone would have told me about supplements when I was that young. I would have maximized what I have.

Thanks to all

Nick

Supplements for a 12 yr old?....LMAO!!! rolleyes.gif

1. Tell the lady to talk to her pediatrician before anything.

Otherwise:
Flintstones Vitamin or a Child's Multi
Possibly protein shakes, in the kid's case probably a RTD
Plenty of food like spaghetti, pizza, steaks, sweet potatoes, pop, ice cream, koolaid, cereal

12 is alittle young, I didn't start till I was 15! And then it was One a Day multi, a few protein shakes I could steal off my brother, and plenty of food!

He'll get everything he needs from 3 solids and no junk food. Including soda of any kind. Tell a 12 year old no soda! laugh.gif If he eats healthy, he'll grow. Anyone seen that young hercules kid since he was taken away from his father?

Training with weights does stunt growth in pre-puberty kids. Body weight exercises do not. Push-ups, pull-ups, body squats, etc. Also only give your kid a quality multi-vitamin, omega 3's,post work out nutrients, and plenty of good food and quality water. Stay away from other supps because his hormones will allow for good and healthy growth. Also malto, dextrose and whey post workout will help recovery and gains. Natural is the best way especially for pre-adults.

Plus he should be doing 3 to 6 months of bodyweight exercises at a good intensity. Plenty of different variations of push-ups, pull-ups,sit-ups,dips bodyweight squats, bodyweight lunges, supermans. Also a punching bag can make a good workout or a great warm-up and warm-down. Make sure he warms up for ten mins before and stretches about ten minutes after, Doing this before weights will help his tendons,ligaments,bonesand muscles grow at a equal rate which will help prevent injury and increase longevity. Please take smart advice when it comes to your kid. His body will adapt and grow try to teach him patience so it will lead to perserverence and maybe keep him away from harmful short cuts.

Please do not jump straight to weights. Plus is he going to be playing any sports? I know many sport- specific workouts and will be happy to share some valuable and knowledgeable information.

For football he is going to want to do plenty of sprints to build up his legs, heart and lungs. If he has anybody to train with human wheelbarrels and throwing someone on your shoulders and doing light jogs help build up strenght dramatically. What position is he trying for? I have coached my middle-school football program and turned it around pretty good mostly with good training principles. Sprints are going to be his best friend also shuffle drills, six- inches and down ups. Stay away from weighted squats till he is about 16 it recruits a lot of muscle fiber but is rough on the knees. Leg presses are great for teens. Also have him stay away from Smith machines as they neglect stabilizer muscles which can lead to dramatic injury.

I would recommend steroids. Those should help him for football. Haha jk. A few whey shakes and multi would be a good start along with some training.
