i have been to the stores and i see ephederine in bottles labeled for breathing problems.

25mg Ephedrine HCL, Bronchodilator.

and what is pseudoephedrine?

What are the other ingredients in such products and how will they affect me if i take it without a breathing problem?

also, does the 25mg dosage suffice?

Hi Glasshed,

Pseudoephedrine is the synthetic form of Ephedrine, meaning it is created artificially. It will affect the CNS simularily to the Ephedra alkaloids extracted from Ephedra plant or Sida Cordifolia, but it is much less potent, and less efficient.

I wouldn't worry about the Guaifenesin in there. If anything it will help your workouts, since it is an expectorant. It should make breathing through the nostrils easier, thin out mucous, and produce a more productive cough.

Guaifenesin in large doses also increases the risk of kidney stones. You should balance this by making sure you are drinking sufficient amounts of water. I wouldn't consider the 200mg in a tablet of Vasopro a large amount, however.

Pseudoephedrine is an orally effective decongestant with effects similar to ephedrine hcl, but less intense. It works by stimulating alpha-receptors particularly in the lining of the nose and sinuses. Alpha-receptors are present on the muscles in the walls of blood vessels. When these receptors are stimulated by pseudoephedrine, the muscle contracts, which causes the blood vessel to narrow. This allows less fluid to travel through these blood vessels. In the lining of the nose and sinuses, this results in less fluid being pushed out of the blood vessels into these linings. This reduces the production of mucous, thereby relieving the symptoms of nasal congestion. Pseudoephedrine can therefore be used to relieve symptoms such as blocked nose and blocked sinuses in conditions such as colds, flu and nasal allergies. The OTC drug Sudafed contains Pseudephedrine.

Guaifenesin is an expectorant present in numerous OTC cough and cold remidies like Robitussin. It increases the production of fluids in the resporitory tract and helps to thin mucus secretions. To my knowledge, there are no serious side effects associated with Guaifenesin.

Pseudoephedrine and ephedrine are different compounds with different pharmacological effects

Its also an emetic in high doses. Its included in EHCL formulations both because it is supposed to make them more effective (not very well supported, IMHO) in treating bronchial asthma and also because it makes it nearly impossible to OD. Take too much and the guaifenesin will make you puke before you can absorb enough epherdrine to make your head explode...
