Purported
ergogenic supplement (increases exercise drive and performance).
Long-chain fatty alcohol (primary aliphatic, saturated), lipid soluble, somewhat poorly absorbed (approx 11% uptake in human gut), metabolized thru beta oxidation pathway after being oxidized a long chain saturated fatty acid (octacosanoic acid), trade name Enduraplex, most common sources: sugar cane extract,
wheat germ oil.
Primary use as an herbal has been as a statin-drug replacement as a cholesterol-lowering treatment; it may sterically hinder cholesterol synthesis in liver. Also appears to inhibit platelet agreggation.
Recent reports sugggest that octacosanoic acid may protect against lipid peroxidation ( see: Inhibition of rat lipoprotein lipid peroxidation by the oral administration of D003, a mixture of very long-chain saturated
fatty acids. R. Menéndez, R. Más, A.M. Amor, N. Ledón, J. Pérez, R.M. González, I. Rodeiro, M. Zayas, and S. Jiménez. Can. J. Physiol. Pharmacol./Rev. Can. Physiol. Pharmacol. 80(1): 13-21, 2002). Polyphenols have similar lipid-protective and cholesterol lowering activities.
Stand alone dosage, 1-2 mg 2x day with meals. When taken as a
policosanol formulation, 10-20 mg day, with meals.
