I understand the reasoning behind the proper post-workout drink containing whey protein and the proper carbs, but...
I use strawberry Myoplex MRP and add ON Any Whey to get 20 extra grams of whey (due to the mrp having casein, and milk as part of the protein matrix).
But to spike blood glucose and signal an insulin response, I add powder grape drink (30 grams) and yes I know it's sucrose and that's not so good. I also read the info at http://www.abcbodybuilding.com/scientific.php. It does suggest dextrose/malto as the right carbs. I've been using my same concoction for 10 years with good results. It tastes good too. I just think the conveinence of the grape drink vs. getting dextrose is more practical.

Really, explain it with some expertise. Is sucrose really bad, or do you have too use more to get the proper response? I am 200 lbs and about 12% bf.

Are there products at the supermarket with the right sugars rather than buying bulk dextrose?

Just a little info on sugars... Note: sucrose = glucose + fructose

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sucrose

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fructose

I would mainly concern myself with the metabolism of fructose and its possible affects concerning your goals.

I understand all that but, is it that the fructose would be the bad factor in this?
I read that fructose is damaging to proteins.

I'm sure the "perfect" post workout drink will continue to be hotly debated for years.

My current understanding is that fructose (which makes up half of sucrose) is not harmful at all, but is primarily used to refill liver glycogen, not muscle glycogen. This doesn't mean you need to avoid it, it just means you still need to get some glucose(from dextrose, maltodextrin, cereals & grains, etc).

I'm assuming your Myoplex MRP has at least 20-30g of some form of glucose carbs, so added with your sucrose drink(which is half glucose), you're probably in very good shape.

If you want more carbs... I think Pixie Sticks (candy) are dextrose. You can also just have bread/bagel, cereal, oatmeal, etc. Bulk Nutrition carries NOW brand dextrose for $1/lb. You can also find bulk dextrose at home brewing stores, if you have any of those near you. They use it to make beer.

That does seem to explain what I'm looking for. I would rather use something that dissolves fast to keep the meal all liquid. I'll probably continue using the grape drink, but I'll add some dextrose.

I did some searching for recovery drinks to see their ingredients. Most of them contain sucrose which did surprise me considering the ease of processing in high volume. You would think that they would use dextrose. It would be nice if someone came out with a simple drink mix with desirable taste, dextrose as a simple carb, and be reasonably priced in large containers.

Thanks for the reply.

Look into Vitargo/Waxy Maize Starch for post w/o. I have yet to try it myself, but there is some interesting information out there about it.

I'm going to start using once I run out of my post w/o shake.

Gatorade powder is something like 35%fructose/65% glucose. Close enough for me. Some fructose is a good thing imo.

I am starting a CKD. What is allowed PWO on the heavy lifting days?
Should I use only whey? or can you put some simple carbs in drink?
