Is there such a thing as a protein supplement with No calories?

For the past few days i've been stopping off at various places(wal-mart,GNC,etc). And see nothing. Finally today i just decided to buy one container thats about 110 calories a scoop,which appeared to be the lowest in calorie content till i could find something better maybe.

This was it: http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/detail?prodid=296865

And I Have not seen ANYTHING in pill form, is that even made?

As for some advice,how much grams of protein intake a day should i be aiming at?

Any suggestions would be appreciated smile.gif

I think what you want is BCAAs.

a protein supplement has to have calories. One gram of protein contains 4 calories, so a protein drink with 25g of protein has to have at least 100 cal.

As for the amount of protein you need, take 1 to 2 grams per pound(upward of 1.5 to 2 if you're wanting to gain weight)

dude you need to know the basics on nutrition, calories is energy, even BCAAs are calories for they are protein.
Fat = 9cal/g
Alcohol = 7cal/g
protein = 4cal/g
carbs = 4cal/g

Grave, protein has 4 calories per gram, as do carbs. Fat has 9 calories per gram.
I saw that on the back of a cereal box! laugh.gif
So, no you cannot find a source of protein with no calories.
I believe pill form would just be a hassle, you'd have to take handfulls to get enough to do any good, although liver pills may be good for that, not sure.
I would take at least 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight, some say twice that or even more.
Since (I believe) you are trying to lose fat, I'm not sure if anything over 1 gram of protein per pound is necessary.
ON's double chocolate protein is pretty tasty, mixes well, and is affordable.

I didn't know that because if you look at a cannister of BCAAs it doesn't tell you how many calories are in a serving. I thought if something has calories it would have to say so.

Yes i want to put on muscle mass to RAISE my BMR, in order to acheive best possible fatloss potential.

Isn't 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight a bit excessive? And is that realistic when trying to be on a low-calorie(about 2,100 a day) diet, or should i just not pay any attention to the calories that come from the protein powder and ignore it?

Afterall the powder i have is very low-fat and even low-carb, its mainly just protein. I guess what i'm trying to ask is: would alot of protein mess up my low-calorie dieting?

Would appreciate some info from Dr.X on this as well.

1 gm per pound is not excessive at all. In fact if you want to increase muscle then 1.2-1.5 per lb is optimum in your case. This won’t mess up your low cal diet because you are still going to remain low cal. What were you eating if you weren’t getting any protein I guess is my question?
What kind of diet are your running?

I was doing the low-calorie diet like you told me a while back. Where i aim at about 2,000 a day but change things around a bit(2000 one day,1900 the next,etc).

And that much protein powder intake for the gram-per-bodyweight count, will add about another 1,000 calories to that. So i'm just wondering if such extra calories from protein will mess up my diet.

Sorry, that’s not what I was getting at. I just wanted to know what you are currently eating to make those 2100 calories. Your only going to need about 840 calories in protein and it shouldn’t all be in shake form. You will have to replace some of what you are eating with protein.
I was thinking about 40% protein 40% fat and 20% carbs in your case.

A bit of ramen noodles,lot of vegatables,banana,peice of meat,occasional snack,etc.

Definitly nothing that comes close to 240grams of protein a day.

840 calories in protein? That makes no sense. As i believe you were saying 1gram per pound of bodyweight. 840 calories would only get me about 160grams of protein(each scoop-110 calories).

I was going by caloric intake and not what you weigh. I'm not sure what your weight is at right now.
It sounds like your not getting any protein in your diet.

Usually end up avoiding the meat i have as i try to keep track of each and every calorie.And most meat in my house does not have any kind of nurition label on it, especially stuff that was separeted into individual plastic bags.

How much do you weigh?
And 840 calories will get you around 210g of protein

That is because it contains some fat and carbs too that are totalling an extra 30 calories.

I concur on everyone's statement about at LEAST one gram per pound of bodyweight. I shoot for well over 2 grams.

You should primarily be consuming your protein from food sources such as chicken, lean beef, eggs, dairy products, fish, turkey, etc. Whey, which you bought, is best taken before and after workouts and not really as a meal replacement b/c it does not stay with you long. Whey is also good for breakfast if mixed with some food to slow digestion such as milk and oatmeal. If you weigh over 150 lbs then take 2 scoops for a serving.

PLEASE CHECK OUT THE DIET SECTION AND READ THE THREADS AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN - AKA STICKIES.

Save your protein mix for the post workout shake and consume some meat. Like I said if you take the basic amount of calories you want to consume and figure out the precentages in your diet you can get the final number.

840 calories of protein 840 calories of fat and 420 calories of carbs for your diet. This make 2100 calories.
